I hold a bachelor’s degree in Geology, which exposed me to the role of critical thinking and simplifying complex subjects.
The English language can present its complexity to a non-native speaker. Therefore, it is crucial to adopt a creative approach to teach it to all types of audiences. During my undergraduate study, I volunteered as an English, and Geology teacher - The experience gained grew my passion to assist individuals to achieve success when faced with the convolution of the language.
Upon graduation, I was enrolled in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) - a one-year mandatory governmental paramilitary training program for all graduates. During this program, I worked as a teacher with the intentionality and dedication to see my students succeed. At the end of the program, students achieved a higher percentage of pass rate when compared to previous years. I was also awarded for this achievement by the school.
In 2017, I was selected for a voluntary program by the Ecuadorian government to teach the English language to their public educational centers. This teaching opportunity aligned with my goal of building my capacity as a tutor. I was posted to a primary school where the pupils had no knowledge, or understanding of the language as it was out of their curriculum.
Although daunting at first, it was a good test of my passion. I was able to achieve a great feat; Within six months, my students had developed basic language skills. I facilitated the organization of the first-ever English language competition, and it was a success - Awards and prizes were won, and a lifetime memory was created among students, parents, and the entire school.
For self-improvement, in 2018, I enrolled myself in a certification called Teaching English as a foreign language/Teaching English to speakers of other languages from Global language training -the UK (online certification.
I further took steps to develop myself in the field since my degree was not in English Language/teaching – a series of workshops; teaching what counts in Mexico in 2019 organized by the British Council, and other ones organized by the school.
Another certification was added to my portfolio in 2019 when I traveled to the United Kingdom for a short course - content language integrated learning (CLIL methodology) from Language Link, London.
